New U.S. Infrastructure Plan: A Win for Our Planet and the Electric Vehicle Market

By Paul Wiener

U.S. President Biden’s recent $2 trillion infrastructure proposal includes a proposed $174 billion earmarked for the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry. This proposal includes $100 billion in new consumer rebates for EV purchases and $15 billion to build a half-million new charging stations. While still in its early stages, the plan is already a significant win – environmentally and economically.

The plan would generate a significant boost for the EV industry and the economy in North America by creating green manufacturing and infrastructure jobs.

The plan marks the administration’s first significant step towards tackling environmental concerns and air pollution. The transportation industry accounts for 60 percent of greenhouse gases in the US. Taking politics out of the mix, making the environment cleaner and healthier is something GaN Systems stands behind 100%. From an economic perspective, the plan would generate a significant boost for the EV industry and the economy in North America by creating green manufacturing and infrastructure jobs.

The Biden proposal will accelerate the significant change that is already underway in the automotive industry. The very definition of what a car is and how it is powered is changing. Technology advances are enabling new EV designs and increasing performance, while simultaneously reducing costs. These new designs with increased driving range, the growth in charging station infrastructure, and purchase incentives will attract increased consumer purchase interest. The resulting growth in EV sales will naturally drive more demand for the components and technologies in those vehicles – including semiconductors. GaN Systems’ high-performance automotive-grade GaN power transistors are critical to the design of lighter, smaller, and more energy efficient onboard chargers (OBCs) and traction inverters in EVs.

GaN Systems enables the creation of EVs that are more energy efficient and less expensive to produce. As a company, we’re excited to be an important part of the next evolution in the global automotive industry as electrification goes mainstream, and the automobile becomes part of the solution to our climate change challenge.

I look forward to my next ultimate driving machine being an EV — and the many more decades of blue skies resulting from our efforts.
